PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

The raising of awareness about topics dealing with disabled people

This project has gathered about 42 non-governmental organizations (from Mostar, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Tuzla) that have had the opportunity to address government officials during the four round tables that we have organized in their cities. Additionally, they have had the opportunity to introduce the wider public to the problems with which disabled persons are daily faced with in our country, as well as to the basic human rights of which these people are deprived.

Hoping that we will bring this topic closer to officials of all governmental institutions, as well as to the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, we have produced two video stories: No Limits and Our Stories. We have promoted these stories using public promotions, TV stations, DVD distributions etc. We have also organized four round tables during which there was a connection established between the chairpersons of the associations for disabled people and government officials.

No Limits

This reportage has as its goal the promotion of sports and other activities in Bosnia and Herzegovina, through which disabled persons can rebuild their lives and find a remedy for their traumatic experiences. The story is being told by the people and associations from Mostar, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Tuzla. Also, issues that have to be dealt with by the government in order to provide basic social justice for these people are depicted.

The opportunities that disabled persons have are represented by the world champions in sitting volleyball – the Bosnian representation. Its members talk about their victories, about whom and what helps them on their way to success, as well as the problems they have to face.

Besides covering successful disabled people, the associations of Mostar, Banja Luka, Sarajevo and Tuzla have met during the round tables held in every of these mentioned cities. As a result, they have agreed on points which deal with the changes that are necessary in our society, and which should serve as a reminder to government officials.

Our Stories

Our Stories are stories of five people who differ in background, place of residence, interests and religion. All of them are living with missing limbs but they have a positive spirit and say that during their recovery they received the most help from their families, non-governmental organizations and the activities that they successfully practice. Bobana, Ermin, Safet, Miodrag and Ibrahim; they all share their stories.
This project was supported by NCDO and the Peace Flame Foundation.
